Are we there yet?

We nearly are!!

It’s been a busy but productive weekend on Plot 32A.

We have finally finished weeding the uncovered area, covered it with weed control fabric and then covered on top with wood chip.

We have started to arrange the raised beds where we want them and also added to the fruit cage with some red / white current bushes that we have been given.

cof

Everything in the greenhouse is progressing nicely and we have our first flowers on the tomato plants.

cof

The cucumbers are getting bigger now so hopefully we will also have some flowers soon.

cof

The peppers and chillis (not sure which are which!) are growing in stature every visit.

cof

In the fruit cage is filling up nicely now as the bushes we planted last year are maturing.

The gooseberries have fruit on them as do the black currents.

cofcof

The new bushes planted this year, raspberry and blue berry and growing nicely.  Wer have planted a climbing black berry and added some current plants, in pots, where they will stay until we know which variety they are.

cof

As we don’t have a composter, we have to bag up and take our weeds home.  we have 5 full bags and 3 containers, all full, to transport home on the next visit, as there was no room in the car this time!!

cof

Now, we need to get some top soil for the raised beds and we can start to grow outside of the green house.

Stay tuned for more updates folks and thanks for reading…..

April Fool

So, this weekend saw our first visit to the plot with the intention of doing some work.

Saturday, I visited on my own as Ally was busy socialising!

I took all the seedlings we had planted at home on the 18th of March and the two big bags of compost we had purchased.cof

We had various variety of tomato’s, pepper’s, chilli’s, cucumbers and beet roots.

Some where strong enough to pot on and some we left to harden off.

The tomato’s where transplanted into 9 inch pots where they will stay.  the pepper’s and chilli’s where moving into 7 inch pots.

I tidied out the greenhouse to accommodate all the pots and trays and set about organising them in it.

cofcof

I then built the second cold frame, tidied all of our wood to behind the greenhouse, out of eyesight and planned to plant the 4 fruit bushes we had bought but, managed to catch my leg on the edge of a broken glass pane and cut it.  What an April Fool!

cof

So that bough the end to the day at the plot.  I went home, got the wound cleaned and dressed.

On Sunday we had plans to go out but, as most of the roads around where we live where closed for the Manchester Marathon, we went to the plot again.

Ally came with me this time and it was a glorious day,

I planted the four fruit bushes, a blueberry, a black current and two raspberry bushes.  Ally weeded, tidied and organised the raised beds.

We need more wood chip to level the beds out and finish covering the bottom of the plot and the fruit cage.  We will then buy some top soil to fill the beds and get the netting for the fruit cage.

We will then be done and ready to plant outside!

Our plum and pear tree are covered in blossom so we are expecting a bumper crop!

Stay tuned for more regular updates as the year progresses.

Its Half Time

Well today we have given up one of the two halves.  We haven’t had the time of late to go and do both halves justice and it was becoming more of a chore when we were there.

So, we have kept the half where we have built the fruit cage and that had the greenhouse and shed on.

All of that half is covered with weed control fabric and wood chip to reduce the pesky weeds.

We will now build raised beds and fill with top soil to get ready for next years growing season.

We have work to do to tidy up area’s but we have time during the Autumn and Winter to do this.

Stay tuned folks……

Planting in the rain…..

This weekend has been a bit of a wash out.  Saturday was a non starter as far as the plot goes so I had to go down today.

I took so beef tomatoes that we had been given down to plot on.  7 in total, nicely potted on and in the green house.

I also planted 2 cucumbers and 4 squash plants into grow bags in the cold frame.

We still have more tomato plants and squash to put in!

That was enough for the afternoon but before I left I took a quick look around the plot.

Everything is coming on nicely.  Just need a nice long summer now please!!!

Stay tuned folks for more blog updates……

FRUIT CAGE!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, the fruit cage is constructed!!

Its taken a while, its not perfect but it is ours and it is great!!

All we need to do now is net it and get some more fruit plants and we’re off.

We will have strawberry gutters all the way through on the inside support posts for even more fruit!DSC_3124DSC_3123DSC_3122

We had a load of wood chip delivered a few days before and this needs to be spread around now to cover the area completely in an effort to suppress the weeds!

DSC_3111

We have topped up the flower border and it now looks so much better, especially with the addition of some more flowers.

DSC_3109

Most of the veg beds are now weeded and planted, thanks to Mrs Weston.

DSC_3125

We have 4 more beds to rescue from the fast growing weeds that have popped up in the last 3 – 4 weeks.  If only the veg grew as fast eh?

During a small break in the work, I noticed a rather large bee busying itself on the blackberries.

DSC_3118DSC_3121

It was considerably bigger than all the other bee’s that were around.  A queen maybe?

Anyway, stay tuned folks as the next event will be the netting and more fruit plants being introduced!

Strawberry Gutters

Been a while since I’ve blogged about A Plot of Two Halves so need to get back on that horse.

The fruit cage now has the addition of two gutters containing strawberry plants.

We’ve put them in the guttering so to keep them from the floor and the slugs!!

We already have fruit on one of the plants!!

DSC_3021

Once this little job was done, i moved on the my nemesis, known as The Mound!!

DSC_3024

That was 6 bags of weeding on its own and about a third of the mound area is now gone.

Once it is all gone the final 8ft square of the fruit cage can be added and the netting put around it.

We will also add some raspberry bushes and blueberry bushes to help enhance our jam making!

DSC_3001

The two gooseberry bushes and two blackcurrant  bushes are coming on nicely.  In fact they are bigger than in this photo now!  No fruit this year but there will be next year, along with the additions mentioned above.

So, we need to finish the mound and them weed the mares tail that has suddenly come to life in the last couple of weeks!!

Stay tuned folks…..

Fruit Cage with Fruit!!!

Gosh, it seems as the last post was months ago.  Oh it was!  In January to be precise.

It’s not that we haven’t been to the plot.  It’s just that I have blogged about it!

So, it’s about time we put that straight.

The weekend just gone, we went to have a tidy up on the plot and plant some fruit bushes that we bought.

We got 2 black current bushes and two goose berry bushes, half price.

The fruit cage is currently 8ft x 16ft but is going to be extended to 24ft long.

The bushes have shoots on them so need to be planted.

As the cage isn’t netted yet, we wanted to protect the plants from possible disturbance so the two black currents were covered and the goose berries have buckets to show their position.

I also started to weed the area where the extra 8ft is going to go but there is still a pot to do!!

DSC_2964

The two tree’s in the image are doing well, with buds all over them!

Alison also planted loads of seeds at home so we now have little seedlings to look forward to!

Stay tuned folks.  Spring is here and summer is not far away!!
